In a New York Times article, Mike Bloomberg officially announced his decision to not seek the presidency this year. This is probably for many of the reasons that have recently been outlined on this blog. However, he did write that if there is a candidate who emerges as an independent thinker who will challenge party orthodoxy with new solutions to problems that make sense, Bloomberg will work to help that candidate win the election. Really, this could be either Obama or Mccain.
Will either candidate consider Bloomberg as a vice president? A cabinet post? Bloomberg would be a powerful and credible force in either role. Bloomberg has met with Obama in the past, so it may be possible.

Bloomberg lambasts economic stimulus package
Bloomberg again showed why he would be a powerful force as President by harshly criticizing the economic stimulus plan recently passed by congress and signed by the President. He notes that these type of politically popular short term fixes are impotent in the long run to stave off recession.
However, as perhaps further indication that he is probably not going to be a candidate for President in this election cycle, Bloomberg applauded Barack Obama for recently announcing a plan to invest in the nation's infrastructure, which Bloomberg called for just a few weeks ago.
Interesting that the most common sense policy that has been proposed by a candidate to date is a complete rip-off of something Bloomberg proposes. If he cannot be President, perhaps a prominent cabinet position would be in order for Mr. Bloomberg?

Final push for Bloomberg
Our friends at Draftbloomberg.com sent out an open letter last week declaring a final 10 day push to show support for an independent run by New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg. His window for getting into the 2008 presidential race is closing as stringent state ballot access requirements across the nation will force action soon.
Although the likely McCain nomination has made the landscape less attractive for a Bloomberg run, as Mccain will attract independent voters that might have gone to Bloomberg, there is still value in having Bloomberg in the race. The conservative base of the Republican party is hardly enthusiastic about a McCain candidacy. On the other side of the aisle, the Democrats are waging a beat-down, drag-out nomination contest that could last all the way until the convention in August in Denver, CO. This means that Michael Bloomberg could come in now and begin to create a coalition of voters based on the common sense, non-partisan policies he would enact as president. In a year where neither party has a clear idea of the direction it would like to go, a third candidate could inject a new voice into the debate.
The right man for the job is Michael Bloomberg.

Reasons why Bloomberg won't run for president
A New York Daily News article has briefly outlined the reasons (many mentioned on this blog in an earlier post) why it is now very unlikely that Mayor Bloomberg will be running for President as an independent.
Bloomberg himself has altered his standard denial that "I am not a candidate" to "I am not a candidate, and I'll stay that way".
The new momentum of McCain has deprived Bloomberg of his base.

Mobile Draft Bloomberg billboard to roam streets of new york
A mobile billboard with a message encouraging Michael Bloomberg to run for president will be driving through the streets of New York City starting Monday. The message will have a picture of Mayor Mike Bloomberg with text that says "Support Mike Bloomberg for president, The only presidential candidate that can't be bought."
Can this effort convince Bloomberg in the face of a strong McCain candidacy?
